The Corporation of Public Broadcasting launched a nationwide initiative, Veterans Coming Home, through local stations as KERA 90.1 to share stories of veterans and local resources which may benefit military servicemembers transitioning to civilain life.   We have posted several of the stories.  Here is the mission of this program:

Communicate veterans’ stories through journalism, documentaries and online content
Convene local events such as job fairs and town hall meetings that recognize veterans for their service and directly connect veterans with resources, support and veterans service organizations.

Lockheed Martin and Bell Helicopter partner with United Way to assist veterans

Two years ago, a donation from Lockheed Martin and Bell Helicopter created a Veterans Fund.   United Way of Tarrant County was selected to administer these funds, and disburse through grants to veteran service organizations in assisting veterans especially those who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Initially, in 2013 the organization did a gaps in services analysis to better understand our veterans prior to awarding  $291, 750 in grants for the first year.  The funds continued in 2014 with an allocation of $423,364 in grants for the second year.  The veterans community is appreciative of these funds provided by Lockheed Martin and Bell …

Homeless Stand Down in Ft. Worth

The Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) every fall has Homeless Stand Downs across the country.  This is an initiative under VA called HUD-VASH to move our homeless veterans into permenant housing.  The Homeless Stand Downs provide hot meals, basic necessities, and information on services to our homeless veterans.  The VA works with local veteran service organizations as VETCO to ensure these items are covered at the event in Ft. Worth.  Additionally, volunteers are crucial in making this a successful day.  There were over 20 volunteers from NAS Ft. Worth JRB.  These military personnel unloaded …

Veterans Announcements and White House Creates Employment Center for Veterans

You will see featured at the Ft. Worth/Dallas Veterans Blog this month the new Employment Center for veterans created by First Lady Michelle Obama and Joining Forces in the White House. Additionally, the Texas Veterans Commission is hosting a job fair in Mesquite on May 30.  The website includes events, news, benefits, and employment opportunities for veterans living in the Metroplex.
