Helping Veterans Claim Their Medical ID Benefit

The effects of military service to our Veterans’ physical and physiological wellbeing can be complex. Veterans are more likely to have two or more of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. Veterans are also at great risk of mental health concerns such as Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Depression, and Traumatic Brain Injury. National health organizations such as The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), recommends wearing a medical ID for chronic conditions which should be communicated promptly in an emergency.

Veterans Medical ID Policy

Since 2009, the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) issued a policy on medical IDs such as bracelets and pendants making them accessible to Veteran patients. The VA fully covers the cost of medical identifications that in the event of an emergency, can help Veterans receive prompt and accurate treatment.

VA clinicians, educators, and health care providers can qualify a veteran for a medical ID based on their medical conditions. Here is a simple guide on how to place a medical ID order for your veteran patients: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2iWyh5ttiQ

3 Simple Steps on How to Place Your Veteran’s Orders for a Medical ID

Step 1: Approve the veteran for a medical ID

Step 2: Submit an electronic consult to the Prosthetics Department

Step 3: Prosthetics Department communicates directly with the approved medical ID vendor. Veteran will receive their medical ID upon receipt of faxed order form and processing.
