Homeless Stand Down in Ft. Worth

The Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) every fall has Homeless Stand Downs across the country.  This is an initiative under VA called HUD-VASH to move our homeless veterans into permenant housing.  The Homeless Stand Downs provide hot meals, basic necessities, and information on services to our homeless veterans.  The VA works with local veteran service organizations as VETCO to ensure these items are covered at the event in Ft. Worth.  Additionally, volunteers are crucial in making this a successful day.  There were over 20 volunteers from NAS Ft. Worth JRB.  These military personnel unloaded the trucks containing all the basic necessities, moved them to the staging area, and assisted each vendor with setting up a table.   The Homeless Stand Down in Ft. Worth served 214 veterans this year.  The highlight was Thanksgiving came 8 days early with a turkey dinner served to these honorable veterans.  Truly a remarkable event every year.
